Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to describe the the students’ translation quality in translating English phrasal verbs into Indonesia. The population of this research were sixth-semester students of English Study Program, Universitas Riau.The sample was selected by using total random sampling (n: 30). The data were collected by distributing a test in the form of text which consisted of thirty two phrasal verbs. The collected data were analysed by using editing, coding, and tabulating method. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the students’ quality in translating English pharal verbs into Indonesian in general was good with the mean score 74,15. Specifically, the stundents’ translation quality in translating English phrasal verb into Indonesian in terms of accuracy,clarity, and naturalness were also good with various mean scores; 73.88, 73.21, and 73.18.Keywords: Quality, Translation, Phrasal Verbs

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research is aimed at finding out the ability of thesecond year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru in speaking. Forty-one students ofOffice Administration class in the second semester of academic year 2017/2018 werechosen to become the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The totalpopulation of the second year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is large enough to betaken as sample, it is select the sample by using cluster random sampling technique.The instrument of the research is a speaking test focusing on procedure texts. The datawere analyzed by using five components of speaking. They are: pronunciation,grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The result shows that the meanscore of the speaking test the second year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is 60,81.This figure is classified into mediocre level. The highest score of speaking test is 62,60(good level) for pronunciation and the lowest score of speaking test is 57,41 (mediocrelevel) for grammar. Therefore, it can be concluded that the speaking ability of thesecond year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is in the range of mediocre level.Key Words: Students’ Speaking Ability, Procedure Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the students’ ability in comprehending recount text. The aim was to find out students ability in comprehending the text. This descriptive research took place in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru from March to April 2015. The sample was 40 students from VIII2 class that took by using cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, there were 30 questions that included in this test. The duration time for doing the test was 40 minutes. The data was analyzed by calculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean score. The students’ score classified into four level mastery; they are: poor, poor to average, average to good, and good to excellent. The data was presented by using graphic. Based on the result finding of this research, the students’ ability in comprehending recount text at second grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru was in poor to average level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 52.6.Keywords: Students’ Ability, Comprehending Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of fishbowl technique on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. The instrument administered in this research was oral speaking tests (pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was 420 of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru and the sample of this research is the X4 of social science class of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The total number of students is 36 students. The collected data were analyzed by operating statistical analysis in form of SPSS 23.0 in order to compare the results of students’ speaking ability in the pre-test and post-test. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test was 55.26, and the mean score of post-test was 69.74. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that teaching speaking by fishbowl technique was effective to improve students’ speaking ability.Key Words : Speaking Ability, Fishbowl technique

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ ability in choosing conjunctions. The sample of this research was the fourth semester students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau. There were 29 students participating as the sample of this research. The data were quantitative and the instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice structure test which consists of 40 questions about choosing the correct conjunctions to complete English sentences. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the scores of the students in answering the test and classified them to a certain level of ability in choosing conjunctions. The result showed that 3 out of 29 students (10.34%) were in the excellent level of ability, 6 students (20.69%) were in the good level of ability, 8 students (27.59%) were in the average level and 12 students (41.38%) were in the poor level. The students’average score was 52.67. This meant that the students’ ability in choosing conjunctions was in average level of ability. The most difficult type of conjunction for the students is subordinating conjunctions with the mean score 49.48 whereas the easiest one is coordinating conjunctions with the mean score 56.90. This research recommended the students to study more about subordinating conjunctions by practicing to answer questions to make them more familiar with subordinating conjunctions. Future studies should focus on how to improve the student’s ability in choosing conjunctions.

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 38 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The research data were collected from March to April 2017. The subject of this research was class VIII-1 which consisted of 30 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. Based on the data analysis it was found out that the highest score obtained by the students was in finding social function with the mean score of 78.66 which categorized into good level, and the lowest score was in finding meaning of vocabulary with the mean score of 50.33 which categorized into mediocre level. As a conclusion, the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension was in the good level with the mean score of 65.3. The implication of the finding is that the students should increase their comprehension in order to reach excellent level.Keywords: Reading Ability, Comprehending Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the listening ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau in comprehending academic talks. The population of this research were all of the fourth semester students which consisted of 89 students. There were 48 students who participated in this study. The instrument was a test adapted from TOEFL Test (Listening Comprehension Part C). The test consisted of 8 academic talks and had 4 questions for each talk. Before the test was administered, the test was tried out to find out the difficulty level and the reliability of the test. To analyze the data, the mean score of the students was calculated and the level of ability was identified by using the classification of ability level by Harris (1974). The result showed that the ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau in comprehending academic talks was at Good level with mean score 61.2. Therefore, it can be concluded that most of the students were able to comprehend talks related to academic situations. However, the students are suggested to practice listening to various aural inputs especially academic talks to improve the ability in listening due to the poorness of their listening ability.Key Words: Listening Ability, Listening Comprehension, Academic Talks

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to determine the correlation between self-esteem and writing ability of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru. This is a correlational research that hastwo variables. The sample of this research is one class consisted of 38 students. The class was chosen by using Cluster Random Sampling Technique.Self-esteem questionnaire and writing test were used to collect the data. The self-esteem data were collected by using a set of questionnaire FLSES (Foreign Language Self-Esteem Scale) designed by Hassan (2001). The data of writing ability were taken by administaring test of writing. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result showsthat there is low correlation between students’ self-esteem and writing ability with the correlation value 0.312,while the coefficient correlation is as big as 9.7 %. The self-esteem of the students is categorized in “average” level and the writing ability is categorized in “good” level.It indicates that the students’ self-esteem influences their writing ability. Based on the finding, it would be better for the students to pay more attantion on personality aspect, such as self-esteem in learning process of writing.Key Words: Correlation, Self-esteem, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the ability of the students in comprehending descriptive text, report text, and recount text in reading comprehension. It has been conducted at SMK Labor Pekanbaru. The total number of population was 8 classes, with the total number of students was 247. The try-out class was X Accounting 3 with the total number of 20 students. The sample class was X Accounting 2 with the number of total 35 students. The try-out class and the sample class chosen by cluster random sampling. The researcher constructed the instrument in multiple choices. The result showed that the ability of the first grade students of SMK Labor Pekanbarun in comprehending Descriptive text, Report text, and Recount text can be categorized into good level with the mean score 62. The students’ highest score was in finding factual information with the mean score 64.8. On the other hand the lowest score that students got was finding meaning of vocabulary with the mean score of 55.7. Meanwhile, the other aspects were such as finding main idea with the mean score of 64.3, finding the reference and inference were at the same mean score 62.4, finding social function with the mean score 64.3, and finding language features with the mean score 59.5. The suggestions are the reading instruction should focus on reading comprehension abilit y for the sake of providing suitable strategies, positive contributions and increase of reading archievement. In other words, the Reading Comprehension of the first grade students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru was in good level.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Descriptive Text, Report Text, Recount Text

Abstract : This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending procedure text and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending procedure text. This research was conducted in SMKN 1 Bangkinang that has been collected in February 2018. The subject of this research was XI TKJ 1 (34 students chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability ofthe eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Bangkinang in comprehending procedure text was in good level whosepecentage was 41.1%.
