Abstract

Abstract: This research seeks to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of Small Group Discussion (SGD) strategy on the second year students’ ability in comprehending hortatory exposition texts at MAN 1 Teluk Kuantan. This research used the pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test post-test design. The selected sample was XI MIA 1 students which consisted of 35 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The results showed that the mean score of post-test (76.00) was higher than mean score of pre-test (70.03). Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of Small Group Discussion strategy on the second year students’ ability in comprehending hortatory exposition texts at MAN 1 Teluk Kuantan. In other words, teaching reading comprehension through SGD strategy is an effective way to solved the students’ problem on the reading comprehension.Key Words: Effect, Small Group Discussion strategy, Reading Ability

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 15 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension. This research focuses on students’ reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of vocabulary, identifying references and finding generic structure, finding social function and finding conclusion,.The data were collected by using reading comprehension test in the format multiple choice. The test contained 25 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension isin the mediocre level with the mean score of 55.6. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in mediocre level with the mean score of 55.56, finding the fatual information is in mediocre level with mean score of 48.95, in finding meaning vocabulary is in good level with mean score of 39.95, in finding references is in mediocre level with the mean score of 66.66, in finding social function level with the mean score of 50.87, generic structure in the good level with mean score 63.17, as a conclusion, the highest score obtained by students is in finding generic structure with the mean score of 68.5. It is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding vocabulary, with the mean score of 3399.9 which categorized into poor level. The results of this study suggest that the students learn more about reading comprehension.Keywords : Study, Ability, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate the effect of Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Assyakirin Bangko Pusako in comprehending folklore. In conducting the research, pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design was used. The sample of this research was the students of class VIII E which consisted of 25 students. The pre-test was administered before the treatment. After the treatment was applied for four meetings using KWL Plus strategy, a post-test was administered. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. From the calculation, the writer found that the value of t-test was 9.005 while t-table was 2.063. Since the t-test value was larger than that of t-table, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was a significant effect of Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Assyakirin Bangko Pusako in comprehending folklore.Key Words: Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy, reading comprehension, folklore

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to investigate whether clustering technique can affect students’ writing ability. The research was conducted at the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Rengat. In conducting the research, the researcher applied a pre-experimental method with XI IPA 1 as the sample. There were 36 students as the sample of this research. This research design used one group pre-test post-test. They were taught by conventional technique. They were given pre-test at the beginning, the post test at the end of the treatment. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. From the calculation, the researcher found that t-test was 7.933 and the t-table was 2.030. Since t-test was higher than t-table, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It means that there is significant effect in using Clustering Technique on students’ ability in writing descriptive texts.Key Words: Writing, Writing Ability, Clustering Technique, Descriptive Texts

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the reading ability of the second year students of SMAN 2 Pangkalan Kerinci in comprehending procedure texts. The population of this research were all of the second year students which consisted of 253 students. There were 25 students who participated in this study. The instrument was a test adapted from authentic material. The frame of the test covers 8 components such as: finding main idea, finding factual information, finding meaning of difficult word, finding references, finding inferences, finding social function, finding generic structure, and finding language features. Each component consist of 4 question and for finding generic structure and language features consist of 3 question because the generic structure question and the language features is too difficult for the students. The test containing 30 items was used to collect the data. Before the test was administered, the test was tried out to find out the difficulty level and the reliability of the test. To analyze the data, the raw scores of the students were calculated and the level of ability was identified by using the classification of ability level by Harris (1974). The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 2 Pangkalan Kerinci in comprehending procedure texts was at Average to Good level with mean score 67. Therefore, it can be concluded that most of the students were able to comprehend procedure texts. However, the students are suggested to do more practice in reading procedure texts in order to comprehend procedure texts to improve the ability in reading due to the poorness of their reading ability.Key Words: Reading Ability, Reading Comprehension, Procedure Texts

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of Numbered Head Together technique on the first year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMAN 2 Tambang. The research design was one group pre-test post-test design. The population was the first year students in academic year 2019/2020. The selected sample was X Bahasa students which consisted of 35 students. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The tests consisted of 40 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (80.5>65.6). The value of t-test was higher than t-table (13.616>2.06) at 5% of significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Numbered Head Together Technique was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative text. There is a significant effect of Numbered Head Together technique on the first year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMAN 2 Tambang. There are some suggestions that can be given in relation to the writer’s conclusion. One of them is Number Head together can be alternative strategy in teaching English. Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 1 Banuhampu in comprehending narrative texts. The population of this research were all of the first year students of SMAN 1 Banuhampu which consist of 238 students. There were 33 students who participated in this study. The instrument was a test adapted from authentic material and consists of 35 questions. The frame of the test covers 7 components: main idea, factual information, contextual meaning, reference, restatement, generic structure and language feature and had 5 questions for each component. Before the test was administered, the test was tried out to find out the difficulty level and the reliability of the test. To analyze the data, the raw scores and the level of ability of the students was calculated and identified by using the classification of ability level by Harris (1974). The result showed that the ability of the first year students of SMAN 1Banuhampu in comprehending narrative texts was at average to good level with mean score 72.12. Therefore, it can be concluded that most of the students were able to comprehend narrative text. However, the students are suggested to learn the seven components in comprehending narrative text that will help them in comprehending others reading texts.Key Words: Ability, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse the grammatical errors made by second semester students in writing paragraph at the English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The aim of this study was to find out eight types of common grammatical errors they are Passive Voice, Verb Tense and Form, Subject- Verb Agreement, Word Order, Preposition, Articles, Plurality, and Auxiliary that made by the participants of the study.Writing a paragraph test were administered to twenty seven participants. They were asked to write a paragraph in 90 minutes and based on the three topics provided by the writer. Three raters were involved in checking the grammatical errors on the participants’ paragraph writing. Then, the errors were classified and described. From the analysis, it was obtained that the participants of study made 80 errors. They were errors in terms of Verb Tense and Form (32.50%), Plurality (21.25%) and Subject-Verb Agreement (12.50%). The lowest percentage of errors was in terms of Word Order (5%) and Passive Voice (5%).Thus, it needs more concern on these aspects. Moreover, the other errors are need to be focused as well. It is recommended that other reseachers find the reasons of those comitted errors.Key Words: Error Analysis, Grammatical Errors, Writing Paragraph

Abstract

The aim of this research is how the implementation of education policy ofsentosa marginal school. With subfokus viz: (1) Targets in the application of education policyimplementation of Marginal School in Dusun Sentosa Desa Simpang Gaung Kecamatan GaungKabupaten Indragiri Hilir Provinsi Riau (2) the implementation of the education system ofMarginal School in Dusun Sentosa Desa Simpang Gaung Kecamatan Gaung Kabupaten IndragiriHilir Provinsi Riau (3) availability of facilities and infrastructure to support the provision ofMarginal School education in Dusun Sentosa Desa Simpang Gaung Kecamatan GaungKabupaten Indragiri Hilir Provinsis Riau (4) Learning process of Marginal School in DusunSentosa Desa Simpang Gaung Kecamatan Gaung Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir Provinsi Riau.This research used Qualitative Descriptive collected from respondents with data collectionthrough documentation, observation anddeep interview. Furthermore, data analysis through datareduction, data display along with conclusion and verification.The result of the research showsthat: (1) Targets in the application of education policy implementation of Marginal School are inaccordance with educational policy of marginal school that isthe marginalized children of DusunSentosa (2) the implementation of the education system in Sentosa marginal school includes:(a) Curriculum that is used in SMP Marginal following the holding schoolthat is school-basedcurriculum (KTSP) (b) the number of the teacherare 4 person and living close to SentosaMarginal School (c)the budgeting sourced from BOS fund andmanaged by the holding school(3) the availability of facilities and infrastructure to support the provision of Marginal Schooleducation is still very limited, SMP Marginal does not have its own building, the learning tool isonly the teachers textbook. SMP Marginal Sentosa utilizing the existing infrastructure, thingsthat are needed such as chalk directly requested to the holding school (4) the learning processof Sentosa Marginal School are more conditioned to the situation of students as well as facilitiesand infrastructure.
