Abstract

Cempedik fish (Osteochilus spilurus) has an important economic value in East Belitung. Still, its trade has not been identified in the Belitung Regency, which is in the western part of Belitung Island. Belitung community perceptions related to fish catching, consumption, and understanding of this fish need to be known to complement the results of studies in East Belitung. Techniques of data collection were carried out using structured interviews in the Membalong District, which has 55% of the Belitung Regency river. The community responses were compared with secondary data of East Belitung citizens. The majority of respondents said that they knew and consumed Cempedik Fish, knew their fishing season and fishing gear, and were optimistic about their cultivation potential. The majority of respondent say knows, consumes, knows the fishing season and fishing gear, and optimistic for the potential farming of Cempedik fish. Most of the Cempedik fish consumption is obtained from catching in the river. Fishing season of Cempedik fish occurs in the dry season, with the majority of fishing gear used are nets. The difference in fishing season and economic value with East Belitung provides opportunities for fish distribution to meet market needs.

Abstract

The reduction of dependency on the consumption of giant prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) from river catchments has essential significance for its natural sustainability. Artificial prawn reproduction gives benefits to the economy and the environment. Applicable maturation technology is needed to facilitate community participation in cultivating giant prawns. The increasing level of gonad maturity (TKG) in this study uses different natural feed in the form of golden snails, earthworms, and squid. Observation of giant prawn maturity was carried out using macroscopic morphological characteristics on the dorsal cephalothorax. All treatments were able to increase TKG from level 2 to level 3 for 30 days of treatment with golden snail intake, giving the fastest increase (7.33 ± 1.1 days) and followed by squid (11.3 ± 2 days) and earthworms (17.67 ± 2 days). Growth of giant prawns with golden snail, earthworm, and squid feed is 1.2, -4.33, -0.83 for weights and 1.03, 0.4, and 0.53 for length. The three natural foods can be utilized for the maturation of giant prawn gonads, but it is necessary to add a source of carbohydrates as energy intake.

Abstract

Belo Laut Village has 3,337 ha of mangrove potential spread over three hamlet areas, namely Belo Laut, Tanjung Punai, and Sukal. On the muddy beaches around the mangroves, the community has developed extensive cultivation of blood clams (Anadara granusa). The existence of cultivation in mangrove areas also has the potential to affect the existence of mangroves in the area. For this reason, it is necessary to know the perception of shellfish cultivators on mangroves and the reality of the condition of mangroves in Belo Laut Village so as to provide an overview of the potential for mangrove destruction due to Blood Clam cultivation. Data were collected by interviewing shellfish farmers in Sukal and Tanjung Punai Hamlets. The production of blood clam cultivation has become a new source of economy in Belo Laut Village which is carried out by almost all family heads in Sukal and Tanjung Punai Hamlets. The community considers that the mangroves in Belo Laut village had not changed in quantity and there was no indication of their use other than for tourism. The perception and understanding of shellfish farmers not to disturb the mangroves were based on the protection of their main source of income as shrimp and crab fishermen.

Abstract

The one of Belitung Island’s native fish which has important economic value is Cempedik fish (Osteochilus spilurus). Its consumption, which still relies on natural catchments, requires a study of its biology and ecology. One of the studies that have never been studied in the maturity of this species is the relationship of fecundity with fish weight - length and gonad weight. This study used samples of Cempedik fish from the Lenggang River, East Belitung which were obtained randomly from the catches of fishermen. Sampling adjusts the fishing season that occurs in the rainy season. The preparation was carried out on whole fish using 4% formalin. Calculation of fecundity gravimetrically and compared with fish lengths and gonad weights in the graph. Fecundity in 2015 was 222 – 10,947 eggs and in 2016 there were 335 – 2,060 eggs. Fish body length and weight affected the fecundity of the 2015 fish sample but had no effect on the 2016 sample. This is predicted to occur due to differences in sampling time to position and rainfall in the rainy season, availability and suitability of natural feed, and changes in habitat quality. Gonadal weight correlated with fecundity, where the higher the gonadal weight, the higher the fecundity. Keywords: Cempedik, rainy season, maturity, fecundity.

Abstract

Extremophilic fish require genetic characterization to determine the identity of their species, their kinship, and the potential for genetic variation due to extreme environmental adaptation. DNA barcoding using Fish-F2 and Fish-R2 primers at an annealing temperature of 52oC for 15 seconds showed qualitative failure results in most fish species. For this reason, optimizing the annealing temperature in the PCR process is necessary to obtain DNA bands that correlate with successful identification. Fish samples were obtained from Ruai Silip, Bangka Island, Membalong, Belitung Island, and Way Kanan, Lampung, Sumatra Island. The annealing temperature optimization was set at 50, 50.4, 51.1, 52.3, 53.7, 54.8, 55.5, and 56°C. Five species of extremophile fish were tested, namely Brevibora sp, Barbodes binotatus, Rasbora bankanensis, Anabas testudineus, and Aplocheilus panchax. Extremophile fish showed differences in the appearance of DNA bands in PCR with different annealing temperatures. Brevibora sp showed a visualization of DNA bands at 54.8°C, Barbodes binotatus at 53.7, 54.8, 55.5, and 56°C, Anabas testudineus at 50 and 50.4°C, and Aplocheilus panchax produced clearly visible band on annealing temperatures.

Abstract

The Selincah fish (Belontia hasselti) is a local Indonesian fish that is widely consumed and has the potential to become ornamental fish. This fish must be domesticated to suppress its exploitation from natural catches. The domestication process requires biological information including eating habits. For this reason, in this study, the identification of phytoplankton contained in the stomach contents of the agile fish was carried out. Fish samples were obtained from Rawa Metukul, South Bangka Regency. The types of phytoplankton in the stomach and intestines of lively fish are the classes Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Chrysophyceae. The most dominant species were found in the Chlorophyceae class with an Index of preponderance value of 42.42%, while the Chrystophyceae class was found at least 2.99%.
