Abstract

Utilization of waste materials with various engineering for the manufacture of products in all fields has been done by many people to get a new alternative of material. One of these materials is corn skin that has a strong nature, light, and significant texture which make it a potential waste material. This research studies the utilization of corn skin through lamination process, which then put a tensile test and acoustic test/damping power by measuring the coefficient of damping to the sound. The method used in this research is experiment in laboratory by making lamination which is laying arrangement process with number of layers starting from 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 layer using wooden adhesive then pressing. After forming the laminated sheets, the specimens are made according to ASTM D638 standard for tensile test and ASTM E-1050-98 standard for acoustic test of specimen. The research results indicates that the laminate of corn skin produced the highest tensile strength value of 18.34 N/mm2 on the layer number of 10 layers. The value of this tensile strength is in the category of class V of wood power that can only be used for temporary construction. While the result of acoustical test indicated that the ability of sound damping shown with the highest of (α) 0.266 coefficient value with the number of layers of 5 layers at low frequency (<4000 Hz). Whereas for high frequency (> 4000 Hz), the reducing coefficient (α) is 0.382 with lamination of 10 layers. Compared with other materials, the results of this lamination of con skin at low frequency of (1000Hz) with α = 0.075 have better sound dumping value than play wood material (α = 0.05) and  styrofoam (α = 0.07), so it can be used as an alternative material for sound absorbers such as:; floors, walls, recording studio rooms, inner walls and sound speaker boxes.

Abstract

penelitian ini  adalah mengkaji tentang pemanfaatan limbah untuk membuat bahan komposit dari  limbah serbuk gergajian kayu (SGK) dan bahan alam serat akar wangi (SAW). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian menggunakan eksperiman di laboratorium dengan membuat komposit SGK-SAWK  dalam bentuk lembaran dan poros dengan perbandingan berat antara SGK dan SAW adalah 5:1, 5:2, 5:3, 5:4 dan 5:5. Setelah terbentuk komposit kemudian dibuat specimen uji, untuk  uji tarik  spesimen  di buat sesuai standart JIS R7601 dan uji akustik (redam suara) sesuai standart ASTM E336-90. Pengujian dilakukan di Laboratoriun Bahan dan Laboratorium Getaran dan Akustik, Fakultas Teknik UGM Yogyakarta. Hasil penelitian  komposit antara serat akar wangi  dan serbuk gergajian kayu bisa mencapai kekuatan tarik  36,2 kg/mm2 pada komposisi 5:2, hasil ini nilainya lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan kekuatan tarik bahan kayu kamper sebesar 12,81 kg/cm2. Demikian juga dalam sifat yang lain komposit ini mempunyai kemampuan sebagai  peredam suara bisa mencapai nilai redam (α) 0,99, pada frekuensi 800 Hz. Nilai ini juga lebih tinggi bila dibandingkan dengan bahan kayu yang mempunyai nilai koefisien redam (α) sebesar 0,07 dan pada plywood nilai redamnya (α) sebesar 0,08. Pembuatan komposit dari bahan serat alam dan limbah bisa dilakukan pada skala rumahan sehingga pemanfaatan bahan tersebut dapat dijadikan alternatif bahan dasar pembuatan produk-produk kreatif maupun desain interior yang murah dan ramah lingkungan di industri kecil.

Abstract

The increasing use of composites in all fields is engineered materials that many people do to obtain the new alternative materials, one of the materials such as natural vetiver fiber (SAW) which is strong and lightweight and powder sawn (SGK), which is waste material. In this research, manufacturing the composite of  SAW and SGK then testing acoustic/absorption power by measuring the absorption coefficient of the sound and the observation of microstructure. The method used in the study is an experiment in the laboratory to make composites based on the ratio of the weight fraction between SAW and SGK from 1: 5, 2: 5, 3: 5, 4: 5 and 5: 5. Having formed the composites, then the specimen has made by an acoustic test that compatible to ASTM E-1050-98 standard with B & K 4206 Small Tube Set test instrument. Furthermore, to determine the composition of fibers in the composites, there do the micro observation. From the results of the show the composites produced the sound absorption ability for the low frequency (1000 Hz) with an absorption coefficient (α) of 0.25 occurred in comparative fraction of 2: 5 (SAW20, SGK50). While at high frequency (5000 Hz) has a value of coefficient (α) of 0.41 occurred in the ratio of 1: 5 (SAW10, SGK50). The number of composition number fiber influence the composite tensile strength and micro observations occurred in the composition ratio of 5: 5 its highest strength.
