Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Many researches revealed that pupils often find difficulties to understand percentage although they are able to recite percent as per hundred and carry out the computations correctly. This might happen due to the way in which the learning percentage has been taught that tends to focus on procedures and recall instead of getting a real understanding of percentage. In Realistic Mathematics Education approach, in which the basic concept is rooted from Freudenthals' idea, mathematics is the activity of organizing matter from reality. Therefore, mathematics should be experientially real for the students. Consequently, in this research the instructional activities were designed through exploring some contextual situations in which percentages play role. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a local instructional theory to support students to extend their understanding of percentage. This research used design research method as an appropriate means to achieve the research aim. The research involved students and mathematics teachers of grade 5 in SD Laboratorium UNESA and SD BOPKRI III Demangan Baru Yogyakarta. Keywords: design research, percentage, understanding, contextual situations

Abstract

This research aims to investigate mathematical literacy of students grade VIII SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta before and after learning using the Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) approach. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were 36 students of class VIII-F, SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta. This research was conducted in March until July of 2016. The data was collected through observation, instructional video recording, and the results of pretest and posttest. Pretest and posttest was designed based on the characteristics of PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) problem. Instructional video was analyzed in qualitative with making a transcript of the video, determining topics of the data, and categorizing the data. The results of pretest and posttest were analyzed qualitatively to determine the students’ ability of mathematical literacy. The findings showed that before the implementation of PMRI the students get a better result in solving PISA problem level 2 compared with the result in solving PISA problem level 3, but after the implementation of PMRI the students get a better result in solving PISA problem level 3 compared with the result in solving PISA problem level 2. It is affected by PMRI learning which applied more focused to guide students to construct their mathematical knowledge instead of doing routine exercises of solving PISA problems.doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2017.010106

Abstract

Effective teachers have a deep knowledge about the content of the subject matter they teach. As well as a deep knowledge of the material being taught, teachers must also have a deep knowledge about the processes and practices of teaching and learning. Pedagogical content knowledge is the intersection of discipline specific subject content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. The purpose of this study is to examine Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of 30 preservice secondary mathematics teachers in microteaching course. The participants of this research are third-year preservice secondary mathematics teachers at Sanata Dharma University undertaking microteaching course. The data were collected in the form of observation, quesstionare, and written document. During the microteaching course, researcher observed preservice teachers’ comprehension of PCK components. The observation sheet is designed based on the conceptual framework for analysing PCK developed by Chick, Baker, Pham, and Cheng (2006). The findings revealed that many students have developed their PCK. However there were also some skills and knowledge that should be improved. Keywords: preservice secondary mathematics teachers, PCK, microteaching

Abstract

Fractions are well known to be difficult to learn, but it is should not be surprising considering the complexity of the concepts involved. In working with fractions, children learn new rules that often conflict with well-established ideas about whole numbers. Many studies have revealed that fractions division has been thought to be the most complex of the mathematical operations in elementary mathematics. However, fractions and the operations have been recognized as an important foundation for the understanding of our number system. Therefore teachers should provide meaningful learning experiences that relate to division of fractions. This present study aimed to analyze secondary school students’ construction of knowledge in fractions division. This descriptive study was conducted with 44 seventh grade students in Pangudi Luhur Junior High School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. During a one-week unit of lesson on division of fractions, students were given a task-based activity specifically designed to promote students’ understanding. Data sources in this study included observation of learning process and a pre and posttest of students’ conceptual knowledge and procedural computation skills. The result showed a significant improvement in students’ conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020205

Abstract

People with tendency to act aggressively shown that they used destructive coping strategies to express their anger. Aim of this paper was to describe the application of Model Adaptasi Roy and Johnson’s Behavioural System Model, focusing on aggresive behavior. Assertive training intervention that provided to 15 clients and cognitive behaviour therapy were that provided to 24 clients. Result of this study shown that sign and symptoms of aggressive behaviour were decreased and increased of clients ability to express their emotion in contructive way. Recommended the Model Adaptasi Roy and Johnson’s Behavioural System Model with assertive training and cognitive behaviour therapy were to derecrease aggresive behaviour.
