Abstract

Palm oil commodity is still one of the largest foreign exchange contributors to the Indonesian states and remains as an attractive industry. In 2016, Indonesia was the main exporter of CPO with the highest production volume in the world. Palm oil issuers face business challenges from external and internal factors. This research was conducted to analyze whether the stock price of oil palm issuer in Indonesia was influenced by macroeconomic variables (crude oil price, exchange rate, inflation, and interest rate) and financial performance variables (DER, ROA, ROE, EPS, and AUR). This is important because if the macroeconomic variables and financial performance of the company have an impact on the company's performance reflected in the stock price movement of the issuer, this will be an important consideration for investors to take decisions. The results of this research using panel data regression (2010-2016 with quarter data) indicated that only one macroeconomic variable of Exchange Rate that had a negative significant effect on the price of palm oil stock while the financial performance variables in this research affecting the palm oil stock price significantly were DER, ROA, ROE, EPS, EPS t-1, and Stock Price t-1. All variables used in this research can represent the influence of the stock price of palm oil by 99.21%.

Abstract

Global partnerships based on sustainability standards compiled by international NGOs are needed to achieve social, economic and environmentally sustainable development, as well as to deal with global uncertainty in trade and business of agricultural commodities, including coffee in Indonesia. This paper aims to compare the implementation of global partnership standards in coffee between Indonesia and other producer countries. The Study focused on sustainable standard-compliant in coffee such as 4C and Organic certification standards. Trade and sustainability map tools were described. The findings demonstrate that there were only 8 percent and 9 percent of the Indonesian coffee area certified by 4C and Organic, respectively. Indonesia placed at number fourth of 4C implementation in the worldwide after Brazil, Colombia, and Viet Nam. Indonesia is also placed at number fourth of Organic implementation in the worldwide after Mexico, Ethiopia, and Peru. To compete in the potential market, Indonesia’s commitment to implement sustainable standard-compliant in coffee is needed. Therefore, Indonesia has to increase the coverage of sustainability standards certified area to meet the global market demand. The government also should implement the right policies and programs to enhance the sustainability compliance of national coffee stakeholders. Keywords: coffee, global trade partnership, sustainability standards, global value chain

Abstract

Herding  Behavior  is  an  irrational  investor  behavior, because  investors  do  not make investment decisions based on economic fundamentals of  risky assets, but based  on  others  investor  in  the  same  condition,  or  following  market  consensus. Herding  behavior  indications  can  be  seen  from  relation  between  dispersion  of stock  return  (Cross  Sectional  Absolute  Deviation,  CSAD)  and  market  portfolio return. If herding behavior exist, CSAD increases lower than increase of market portfolio  return  moreover,  CSAD  will  decrease  even  though  market  portfolio return increases. Herding behavior in stock market can trigger mislead in stock pricing  because  is  bias  among  investors  in  analyzing  risk  and  return.  To understand  relationship  between  CSAD  and  market  portfolio  return  in  some conditions, Quantil regression is used. Result gained from this research is that in Indonesian  and  global  Asia  Pacific  stock  market,  herding  behavior  occurs  in  a market stress condition, whereas in normal condition or in condition of very high stock return, investor behavior tends to be more rational.  Keywords : herd behavior, Quanrtile regression, CSAD

Abstract

Unemployment is a problem that occurs in many countries and often gets special attention both from policymakers and academics. This fact is because if not addressed, it will cause socio-economic problems in the country. Therefore it is necessary to formulate the causes of unemployment by involving spatial aspects to avoid biased and inefficient estimates. This study aims to find the determinants of unemployment rates in Indonesia, including calculating the direct and indirect effect of using the spatial Durbin models (SDM) in the period 2000-2017. The results of this study indicate that the overall independent variables used significantly influence the unemployment rate in Indonesia. Besides, it turns out that the higher education variable completed by the population of a region has the most significant impact both in decreasing unemployment in a region and neighboring regions. Therefore, the policy taken should pay attention to this.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of the future of Indonesia’s food consumption up to 2045, using a baseline of food consumption in 2017 and projections to 2025 as milestones, and to draw policy relevance on food and related issues for the next Medium-Term Development Planning of 2020–2024. The projected demand of Indonesian food consumption is built based on the functional relationship between income and food consumption at the baseline using three different scenarios of economic growth: baseline, moderate, and optimistic. Method of Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) was implemented to estimate changes of food consumption. Susenas data from 2017 is used as the baseline of food demand model. Susenas data from 1990–2016 is used to analyze selected food consumption trends and the relationship between food consumption, price trends, and income in all 33 provinces of Indonesia. The results show that future food demand in Indonesia is determined by existing demand, income, price and its composition, and various other factors that affect the behavior and trends of consumption. The policy should focus on the balance between demand-side management and supply-side or productivity improvement, as the majority of food production centers are located in Java.

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between credit risk and profitability on the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of commercial banks in Indonesia. The empirical model result shows that credit risk and profitability performance altogether significantly influence the capital adequacy ratio (CAR). Partially, the variables that significantly influence the CAR are the characteristics and complexity of the bank group. This study also suggests that the pace towards the long-term balance is, in general, less than one year. Capital ratio in the banking industry is 8%, indicating the bank has set aside to anticipate the impact of external factors as well as to comply with Bank Indonesia Regulation Number 15/12/PBI/2013.

Abstract

Analysis on the relationship between competitive position and efficiency with the focus on the Indonesian commercial banks is still very rare. On the other hand, the commercial banks contains banks have systemic impact when they have troubles. The objective of this analysis is to examine the direction of the relationship between competitive position and efficiency which has managerial and policy implications for the parties concerned. The relationship was evaluated using Granger-causality test, where previous studies for Indonesian banking sector did not use this test. The quarterly financial data of each bank sample, balanced sheet and profit/loss statement, were used to calculate the efficiency score and Lerner index. The data were taken from the website of Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK). Lerner index was used as an indicator for competitive position of banks, and higher index means a stronger competitive position. A score calculated by data envelopment analysis (DEA) method is a measure for bank efficiency. Dynamic model is estimated by generalized method of moment (GMM) to address endogeneity and heteroscedasticity issues. The study found that there is a significant one-way positive relationship between efficiency and competitive position, and the causality runs from efficiency to competitive position. The policy implication in this finding is that regulators should avoid implementing a regulation, which is counterproductive in strengthening bank’s ability to compete in the market. Keywords: competitive position, DEA, efficiency, Granger-causality, pricing power

Abstract

There were differences in research results of several previous studies which examined the relationship between external sourcing and corporate financial performances. Those results indicated that external sourcing could have a positive, negative, or no effect on the financial performance of the company. There was numerous literature stated that external sourcing was a strategy to minimize costs which could reduce production and procurement costs, thus becoming a strategy considered by the top management to improve the company performance. This study analyzed the external sourcing effects on financial performance (ROA) of manufacturing company listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI). Total population of manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2012-2016 was as many as 132 companies, but there were only 70 companies that met the criteria to be the object of the research. The manufacturing company used three industry sectors namely basic and chemical industry, consumer goods industry, and miscellaneous industry as the research objects. Using panel data regression, the research results indicated that external sourcing strategy had a significant and negative effect on ROA. Negative effects resulting from purchases on external parties (external sourcing) were caused by the high cost of sales exceeded the company revenue. Therefore, the company should pay attention to the level of purchases made, namely purchases to the third party on raw materials and goods in the process to have the level of purchases at an optimal point in order to generate profits for the company. Keywords: external sourcing, financial performance, panel data, manufacturing company
