Abstract

Tin mining has left hundreds of ex-mine lake in Muntok Subdistrict, West Bangka Regency, which is both problems and potential to be exploited. Empowerment of the lake for freshwater fish farming can provide alternative livelihood opportunities besides tin mining. The study of the use of the lakes for fish farming aims to determine the purpose of fish farming with its problems and potential. The study was conducted in June - July 2018 with a descriptive qualitative method through a process of interviews and observations during the implementation of the task of fisheries instructor. The object is on three groups who use the lake for fish farming. The lake can be used productively for catfish and catfish culture utilizing the system of the pen culture. The obstacle of using the lake for fish culture is the potential for bioaccumulation of heavy metals, the difficulty of implementing water quality management, and lower productivity compared to artificial ponds. Under cultivation is recommended to choose Clarias commodities in consideration of consumer safety against bioaccumulation of heavy metals.

Abstract

Cellulose as an abundant source of glucose in Indonesia requires acceleration of decomposition utilizing cellulolytic bacteria.  Cellulolytic bacteria can be obtained from the isolation of mangrove organic matter, such as sediments. Muntok Sub-district is one of the regions with the most tin mining in West Bangka Regency also has mangroves in the coastal area. Exploration of cellulolytic bacteria in mangroves with different environmental characteristics encourages researchers to find new bacterial strains that produce cellulase enzymes with new properties. Thirteen isolates were successfully isolated from three locations. Tembelok mangrove sediments produced Seven bacterial isolates, Peltim Mangrove samples produced three isolates and from Sukal Mangrove three isolates were obtained. Seven isolates showed clear zones in the Lugol test and three isolates including were gram-positive bacteria. Molecular test with 16S rRNA analysis showed TBL1 isolate has 85% similar identity of  Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain HY3 and TBL2 isolate has 98% similar identity of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain HS8. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens potential to further study as cellulose degrading bacteria for feed ingredients.

Abstract

Osteochilus spilurus, which has been known to be of minimal use, is an important economical fish in East Belitung. Public perceptions related to consumption and understanding of these fish need to be known as the community's point of view in utilization and management. This study was conducted to obtain information about people’s perceptions about Cempedik Fish from the citizen and related business actors in Gantung District. Information and data collection techniques in this study were carried out with three kinds of methods, namely, interviews, observation, and discussion. Public perception of Gantung District, Belitung Timur Regency towards Cempedik Fish shows that more than 79% of respondents recognize and consume these fish with the majority of consumption obtained from trade. Season and methods of catching Cempedik fish are understood to be more than 65% of respondents. Most of them assume that the size and number of fish are not changing. But they hope protection and cultivation for the continuity of production. The limited availability of Cempedik Fish products outside the rainy season is a potential for its development as an aquaculture commodity for meeting market demands and the sustainability of populations in their natural habitats.

Abstract

The reduction of dependency on the consumption of giant prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) from river catchments has essential significance for its natural sustainability. Artificial prawn reproduction gives benefits to the economy and the environment. Applicable maturation technology is needed to facilitate community participation in cultivating giant prawns. The increasing level of gonad maturity (TKG) in this study uses different natural feed in the form of golden snails, earthworms, and squid. Observation of giant prawn maturity was carried out using macroscopic morphological characteristics on the dorsal cephalothorax. All treatments were able to increase TKG from level 2 to level 3 for 30 days of treatment with golden snail intake, giving the fastest increase (7.33 ± 1.1 days) and followed by squid (11.3 ± 2 days) and earthworms (17.67 ± 2 days). Growth of giant prawns with golden snail, earthworm, and squid feed is 1.2, -4.33, -0.83 for weights and 1.03, 0.4, and 0.53 for length. The three natural foods can be utilized for the maturation of giant prawn gonads, but it is necessary to add a source of carbohydrates as energy intake.

Abstract

Belo Laut Village has 3,337 ha of mangrove potential spread over three hamlet areas, namely Belo Laut, Tanjung Punai, and Sukal. On the muddy beaches around the mangroves, the community has developed extensive cultivation of blood clams (Anadara granusa). The existence of cultivation in mangrove areas also has the potential to affect the existence of mangroves in the area. For this reason, it is necessary to know the perception of shellfish cultivators on mangroves and the reality of the condition of mangroves in Belo Laut Village so as to provide an overview of the potential for mangrove destruction due to Blood Clam cultivation. Data were collected by interviewing shellfish farmers in Sukal and Tanjung Punai Hamlets. The production of blood clam cultivation has become a new source of economy in Belo Laut Village which is carried out by almost all family heads in Sukal and Tanjung Punai Hamlets. The community considers that the mangroves in Belo Laut village had not changed in quantity and there was no indication of their use other than for tourism. The perception and understanding of shellfish farmers not to disturb the mangroves were based on the protection of their main source of income as shrimp and crab fishermen.
