Abstract

The n-hexane fraction of “jaloh" extract could reduce detrimental effects of heat stress on broiler chicken. An experiment was conducted to study morphometric of small intestine villi (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) and performances of broiler exposed to heat stress on 33±1oC for 4 hours/day and given extract n-hexane of “jaloh" bark (EHJ) with doses 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg body weight (BW). Thirty broilers aged 20 days (Cobb strain) were randomly divided into 5 groups of treatments. The first treatment group was external control namely chickens without heat stress and without EHJ administration (tCP). The second group of treatment was internal control representing chickens exposed to heat stress without EHJ administration (CP). The third, fourth, and fifth treatment groups consisted of chickens exposed to heat stress and given 5 (CP+EHJ5), 10 (CP+EHJ10), and 20 mg/kg BW of EHJ (CP+EHJ20), respectively. Heat stress and “jaloh" extract were implemented every day. “Jaloh" extracts were given 1 hour before temperature in the cage was raised. Results showed that heat stress decreased weight gain and height of jejunum villi, and increased feed conversion ratio. The dose of 10 mg/kg BW of EHJ can improve performance of broiler chickens and morphometric of small intestine villi. Key words: heat stress, Salix tetrasperma, performance, broiler

Abstract

Generally, Bacteria in the intestine consist of beneficial bacteria and bacteria that have the potential to disrupt animal health such as pathogenic bacteria. The presence of pathogenic bacteria is one of the factors that cause gastrointestinal dysfunction, but can be suppressed by maintaining the presence of beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract, especially the type of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) (Astuti, 2016). LAB has antagonistic activity because it is able to inhibit pathogenic bacteria so it can compete to maintain normal flora balance in the digestive tract.  The main inhibitory activity of LAB is caused by the accumulation of primary metabolites such as lactic acid, acetic acid, ethanol, and carbon dioxide. In addition, LAB is also capable of producing antibacterial compounds such as bacteriocins (Furtado et al., 2014). Naturally LAB has existed in the digestive tract of chickens, but it is easy to experience changes in the amount due to the influence of given the feed (Widodo et al., 2015). Feed and the environment can affect the composition of microbes in the digestive tract in chickens(Ghadban, 2002; Apajalahti et al., 2004). Provision of fermented feed can improve the composition of intestinal microflora and increase the number of LAB. Fermented feed is generally easily biodegradable and has a higher nutritional value than the original ingredient and it can reduce the pH of the digestive tract.AKBISprob is an alternative product to increase poultry production in the form of supplement made from a mixture of soybean wate, and palm kernel meal which is fermented with Aspergillus niger.  The fermentation process using Aspergillus niger can reduce the crude fiber contained in AKBIS, because the mold can produce amylase, pectinase, amyloglucosidase and cellulase enzymes which can degrade cellulose so that it is easier to digest. In addition, Aspergillus niger also produces metabolites in the form of citric acid which is a component that can reduce intestinal pH so that it is suitable for LAB growth. Based on research conducted by Nurliana et al. (2016; 2017), supplementation of 4% AKBISprob can maintain the chickens production and health as well increase the number of LAB and reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. in chickens intestine. Thus creating a balance of microflora in the digestive tract of laying hens. Based on the above reasons, it is necessary to conduct research on antibacterial detection of BAL in laying hens that have been given AKBISprob.

Abstract

Mineral content of Cu and Fe in plasma and hair in related to anemia cases on female goatABSTRACT. A research had been done to identify mineral content of Cu and Fe in plasma and hair related to anemia case on female goat. Twenty female local goats at the age of 12-16 months taken from Kecamatan Darussalam and Kecamatan Baitussalam Kabupaten Aceh Besar were applied. The goats taken have the criteria of hemoglobin rate (Hb) and/or Packed Cell Volume (PCV) lower than normal level. Hair and blood were sampled in this research. Hair samples were taken from top tail area, while blood samples were taken from jugular vein. The result indicated that the average rate of Hb was 77 ± 0.7 mg/dl and PCV was 191 ± 1.3%. The average rate of Cu and Fe in plasma was 0.7 ± 0.16 and 67.8 ± 10.3 μg/ml, while in hair was 2.40 ± 0.511 and 315 ± 8.4 μg/g. The average rate of Cu in plasma was categorized as below normal, while the average rate of Fe in the range of marginal. Regression analysis showed that there was close correlation between Hb rates and PCV as well as the correlation of Hb rate and Cu rate in hair. However, there was no close correlation between Hb rate and Fe rate in hair. The conclusion of the research implied that the amount of PCV and Cu rate in hair relevant to the Hb rate in blood, and could subsequently predict anemia case occurring on female goats.
