The purpose of this study; 1) To find out students’ mistak es in doing essay questions based on Newman Error Analysis (NEA). This research is a qualitative case study research. Sampling using purposive sampling. The subjects of this study were 28 students of class VIII C of SMP N 3 Tulak an in the 2019/2020 academic year. The instruments used in this study were tests, and interviews. Meanwhile, data analysis used by Miles Huberman. The form of student error based on Newman’s Error (NEA) is as follows; 1) rea dings error, students do not write what is k nown in the questions because they do not read the command questions properly. 2) comprehensions error, students do not write down what is being ask ed in the questions because they do not understand the command q uestions well. 3) transformations error, students do not write the formula correctly because they do not understand the material. 4) processing sk ill error, students count incorrectly because they are not careful. 5) encoding error, students do not write c onclusions because at the previous stage an error has occurred.
